Profile: Mary Ellen Clausen is widely recognized as an innovative leader in eating disorder prevention, education and advocacy. In 2002 she founded Ophelias Place, a nonprofit committed to empowering individuals, families, and communities to redefine beauty and health through initiatives that increase self-esteem, improve body image and introduce alternatives to dangerous desires for perfection; and to providing outreach, advocacy and educational services to those impacted by eating disorders, disordered eating and body dissatisfaction. In 2009 Ophelia's Place opened Cafe at 407 as a creative way to fund our non-profit along with providing a space for the community where the vision comes to life.
Mary Ellen has been the recipient of many awards including Syracuse Zonta Foundation Crystal Ball Award (May 2012), the National Eating Disorders Association, The Westin Family Award for Excellence in Activism and Advocacy (October 2013), the Post Standard Achievement Award (April 2007), New York State Senate Women of Distinction (June 2004), and 25 Women In Leadership (2003), Eating Disorders Coalition Power of Action Award (2003).
