Women TIES & Women's Athletic Network: Roller Derby Baby!
It is time to go back to our junior or highschool days and lace up some roller skates and hit the track to try Roller Derby - one of the sports Founder of Women TIES and the W.A.N. has on her must-try sports list. Who else is in? For your information: Roller derby is a roller skating contact sport played on an oval track by two teams of five skaters. It is played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide, mostly in the United States. We are happy to announce CNY Roller Derby will host Tracy and her gang of pink sporting rebels at Rookie Night at Skate-A-While in Rome, NY. They will provide all the equipment except the mouthguards which you'll need to buy and bring with you. We want a team name so we will take name suggestions from everyone who signs up. The cost for the entire 8-week program with games is $50 (if you have interest in their offer) but for us to drop in and play one night is $10. I'm increasing it to $29 so we can give them a tip and bring us some water and snacks. A decent price for two hours of fun and learning. So who wants to join me on skates and go back to the 80's to play, network and bond with other women in business and sports? I'll see you on skates! By the Way: A 60-minute roller derby game, or bout, is a series of two-minute timed jams. Each team, typically with a roster of 15, fields five skaters during each jam: one jammer, designated with a star on their helmet, and four blockers. The jammer scores a point for each opposing blocker they lap. The blockers simultaneously defend by hindering the opposing jammer, while also playing offense by maneuvering to aid their own jammer. About the Presenter Tracy first tried roller blading in junior high school in Rome, NY many moons ago, now she returns to give roller derby a try since she is trying every sport once in her lifetime and taking women with her on her athletic journey.
