14th Annual Kentucky Derby Fundraiser to Support Positively Pink Packages Breast Cancer Efforts - Media Sponsored by Women TIES
Every year Women TIES hears the devastating news about women in our organization and community diagnosed with breast cancer. Women TIES is a proud sponsor of this annual Kentucky Derby Fundraiser to support one of our own Jennifer Tom, Founder of Positively Pink Packages, who is a breast cancer survivor herself. This fun, festive, annual event is centered around the popular Kentucky Derby. Join friends and family at this event watching the race, drinking mint juleps, eating great food and supporting breast cancer care packages for newly diagnosed women getting the news. It also features a "Best Derby Hat Contest" so dawn your best hat. Make a difference by attending the event and the festive atmosphere! To learn more about Positively Pink Packages or to make a reservation, go to http://positivelypinkpackages.org About the Presenter In 2003, Jennifer walked into the surgeon's office for the first time after her lumpectomy with both a sense of relief of having the tumor removed and a sense of trepidation. The sense of trepidation grew when I looked into the sad, grief filled eyes of the surgeon. I knew what she was about to tell me would be harder than the first time, when she said, "The tumor is malignant." She gently revealed to me that she had just received the pathology report back and the cancer had spread into my lymph nodes. After much pressuring from me, she revealed that 15 of the 23 nodes were found to be positive of cancer. As I had a full week of becoming an expert at breast cancer, I asked if it had been detected in my blood, and she replied "yes". She looked at me and said words I will never forget. She said, "If anyone can beat this, it's you." She gave me hope, when I could fine none. As Vickie Gerard writes in her book, There's No Place Like Hope, "Hope-what a wonderful, beautiful word it is. I had not understood until that moment that all my deepest emotions had evolved around that word. The roller coaster ride that had become my life had all been driven by the loss of, and the renewed search for-hope. Yes, I would have loved a guarantee that I would get well, but I knew that that was impossible. What I had been searching for was hope. Without hope I could find no foothold, nothing to stop my spiraling, downward fall." It is now my passion to share that hope with others.
Serenity Now - A Special Mother’s Day Retreat - Media Sponsored Event by Women TIES
This retreat is produced by Women TIES Member Barbara Klein of Inspired Possibility and Media Sponsored by Women TIES. This event is for you if you have loved a child with these challenges, no matter where you are on this journey, no matter where your child is now on this journey, whether your child is doing well right now, or whether your child has died. Because all that matters is that you have known the unique experience of loving this child – the powerlessness, the hope, the fear, the loss… that others may never know. You have lived a life that you never imagined, never planned for and certainly were not prepared for. You deserve some time to soak in self-care, self-compassion, and bask in loving kindness. My wish for you is to live your life as fully as possible, knowing that peace, joy, and laughter can still be part of your life, no matter what your child's path may be – and to know that that is okay for you to live fully. My wish for you this weekend… I want you to have a respite from caring for your loved one, I want you to strengthen the ground you walk upon by learning how to nurture and nourish yourselfthrough practices of self-care In this space, you have permission to let down, About the Presenter I am committed to partnering with you as you embrace and step into the life that is yours for the claiming - a life that is rich and fulfilling in many ways. I am committed to helping you open to possibility, create peace, and find purpose in your life as you become more and more deeply who you were born to be. I am committed to helping you find a way to do all of this without any more striving, driving, or pushing (because I know we already have enough of that in our lives!)! I work with people through 1:1 coaching, individual workshops, program series, and customized personal and professional retreats.
Right To Run 19K & 5K Media Sponsored by Women TIES
The Women's Right to Run is an event featuring both a 19K and a 5K running race in historic Seneca Falls, NY on Saturday May 12, 2018 – the Saturday of Mother's Day Weekend. The event is open to all, it is NOT a women only event. The course is picturesque and relatively flat. Both distances run through the New York Chiropractic College, by the Elizabeth Cady Stanton house, and by the Vendor Village – which is located on a major street in town. It will end at the future home of The National Women's Hall of Fame, the Seneca Knitting Mill. The event is a fundraiser for the renovation and will become The Center for Great Women. About the Presenter We are so excited to announce that Kathrine Switzer will be participating in this year's Right to Run race! She has been a leader and advocate for advancing women in sports for decades, and her presence will be motivation for men, women, and children alike. So much can be learned by her commitment and enthusiasm and we hope it inspires even more people to join us on race day. As a 20-year-old Syracuse University junior in 1967, Switzer became the first woman to officially enter and run the Boston Marathon. Her participation was met with controversy and even led to a race director's attempt to forcibly remove her from the race only two miles into the run. This moment, captured in photos, eventually led to an international revolution in women's running. Her commitment to finishing the race and breaking barriers for women in running inspired her to devote her life to creating greater opportunities for women in sports, with a focus on empowering women and girls of all ages. After the 1967 Boston Marathon, Switzer continued her passion, becoming an elite runner while also campaigning for sports equality for women. Switzer ultimately ran 41 marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 1975 and returning in 2017 — 50 years after her first entry. She won the New York City Marathon in 1974, and when she ran it again in 2017, she became the first woman to run a marathon 50 years after her first. In 2015, Switzer established 261 Fearless as a global nonprofit organization to empower and unite women through the creation of local running clubs, educational programs, communication platforms and social running events. The number 261 is a nod to her bib number in the 1967 Boston Marathon that the race director tried to take from her, and she'll be once again wearing that bib number at the Seneca Falls Right to Run 19K/5K. The Right to Run 19K/5K, held on Saturday, May 12, 2018, features both a 19K and a 5K running option through historic Seneca Falls, NY. Its purpose is to help inspire, empower, mobilize and connect women, men, and youth – it is not a women-only event. The 19K distance is a nod to the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote. This year's net proceeds will be donated to Girls on the Run Upstate New York Chapter and the National Women's Hall of Fame.
